5 Tips on Saving Money While in College

College is a stressful time for students. Between their class load, work schedule, and trying to maintain a social life, they also have to think about finances. College students have many bills to pay. These include their tuition bill, potentially a credit card bill, car payment, and car insurance. Most students take out loans to help them pay for school and help cover the other expenses as well. However, with all this spending, it is important to also save a little as well. Here are some tips on how to save money while in college.



1. Become knowledgeable about finances.

Financial literacy is extremely important for everyone. Knowing all this information can help you make better financial decisions, know how to best spend and save money, and help you plan for the future.

2. Have a savings and checking account.

Having two separate accounts is always a good option. One account can be for paying all of your expenses and the other one can be where you put some money to save for later. Emergencies and unplanned expenses may come up and it is important to have a little bit of money saved for those times.


Saving money can be extremely difficult but  having two accounts makes it a little easier!

3. Check your accounts often.

It is important to keep track of all of your financial activity. Banks have made this easier but allowing you to see your activity online. All you have to do is log on to your account and your bank account information will come up. It will show you the total amount in each account, what money you have spent or withdrawn from the accounts, and any money you deposited into your account. It is important to check this often. I try to get on my account once a day or once every two days just to make sure everything is order. this will hep you stay on top of your finances and know if you need to cut back spending anywhere.

4. Spend on necessities.

It is easy for college students to spend their money on items that maybe unnecessary at the time. It is important for you to decide if you actually need it or just want it. For example, if you already have a pair of rain boots, is a second pair really necessary? It is important to spend your money on things such as food, textbooks, and a car to help make transportation easier.

5. Search for the best deals.

With technology, it is easy to go to a store, scan an item, and compare prices to other stores. This can really help you save some money! I know my sister has done this in the past and when she shows the cashier that another store has the item for a lower price, they will match that price! Using this often can help you save money in the long run. Even if it may not seem like much now, it will add up!
