3 Tips For Finding Affordable Yet Quality Entertainment

While it is definitely smart for college students to gravitate toward free recreational activities and free entertainment, there comes a time when one must simply spend some money for the newest high quality entertainment. We have complete respect for filmmakers, artists, and content creators, so we aren't advocating for slipping into the theater without paying or illegally downloading music and games for free. Instead, we want to offer practical tips on how to budget for popular entertainment such as movies, concerts, and games. Here are three tips for finding affordable yet quality entertainment:

 1. Don't pay full price at the movie theater

Never pay full price when you go to the movie theater. If getting an extra large popcorn and drink when you go to see the newest superhero film opening night is at one end of the spectrum and smuggling in licorice after waiting four months to see it at the cheap theater is on the other end of the spectrum, you need to find a middle ground. Movie theaters usually offer discounted tickets and concessions for matinee showings and on specific days of the week, so doing some research about your local theaters will help you save a lot of money each time you see a movie.

2. Save up for concerts

Since the ads on online sites like YouTube, Pandora, and Spotify make listening to music virtually free, there's little reason for college students to spend money on much else music-related besides concerts. That being said, seeing your favorite bands live in concert is a totally worthwhile way to experience personal enjoyment and inspiration and to spend time with friends.

While we argue that it's wiser to choose music festivals, concerts, bands, and seats where you can get a ticket for about $25, we also understand that ticket prices for your favorite band could be as much as $100. However, we don't recommend forking over $500 for front row tickets to see the latest boy band on their world tour. No matter how much money you plan on spending for your next concert, set aside small amounts from each paycheck until you've saved enough to cover the cost of your ticket and don't forget to also set aside money for transportation, concessions, and any souvenirs you might want to purchase.

3. Invest in games

When it comes to choosing between entertainment options, investing in board games and video games is one of the best decisions you can make. The majority of these games can be bought for between $25 and $75 and then played over and over again. A single purchase could lead to hundreds of hours of fun. If you find an intriguing game outside of your price range, consider going in on it with a group of friends.

You don't have to break your budget for expensive movies, concerts, and games. Do your research, look for deals, and save up!
